Dr. John Norbury, MD

John Norbury, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Virginia Commonwealth University. He previously served as the founding Division Chief and PM&R Residency Program Director at the Texas Tech Health Sciences Center, where he successfully launched a PM&R residency program that received commendation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education within 15 months. Additionally, he established the only resident Veterans Affairs-based PM&R continuity clinic in the country.
Dr. Norbury’s clinical practice encompasses general physiatry and the care of patients with neuromuscular disorders. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications on topics such as neuromuscular ultrasound, ultrasound-guided interventions, methods for teaching these interventions to learners, and PM&R education. His academic contributions have earned him several accolades, including induction into the Gold Humanism Honor Society in 2024 and the ECU Brody School of Medicine Master Educator Award in 2021.
Dr. Norbury holds board certifications in electrodiagnostic medicine and neuromuscular ultrasound, and is registered in musculoskeletal sonography. He has also served on the board of the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM).
Dr. Norbury’s academic journey began at Yale University, where he completed his undergraduate studies. He earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University and subsequently completed his residency at Thomas Jefferson University.
